Why Are Springs Necessary?
Without them, your garage door wouldn’t be able to open at all! To get something that heavy off the ground, a solid amount of force is required. To get that force, energy is stored up whenever the door is lowered, and that same energy is then used to lift the door back up when you at the push of a button. The energy comes from tension created by certain movements, depending on which type of spring you have.
Torsion and Extension
The torsion type springs twist up tight to store the energy needed, whereas the extension type stretches out as far as it can to do so. While extension used to be quite common, it’s fallen out of favor nowadays, because the stretching action makes it degrade faster, and also makes it potentially more dangerous, because when it snaps it can go flying and injure someone. That's why torsion has become the preferred type. Not only does it last longer, but due to the twisting nature of its action it also poses less danger when it snaps.
Constant daily use will wear-out either type, though. So, if your door starts shaking a lot when it's moving, goes up only halfway and then stops, or if you’ve heard a sudden loud bang come from your garage, your spring may be broken.
